STOCKHOLM -- Lee Westwood showed why Sweden is a happy hunting ground for him on Thursday as he carded a 64 to move three shots clear of the field at the European Tour’s Nordea Masters.

Westwood followed up his first-round score of 68 by registering eight birdies to move to 12 under par ahead of a chasing pack of three. The tournament started on Wednesday and ends on Saturday to help some of its players make it to the U.S. Open more easily.

The Nordea Masters provided Westwood with his first European Tour victory in 1996, and he also won the event in 2000. And the world No. 3 was delighted to top the summit after Day 2.

"I've always enjoyed coming to Sweden," Westwood said. "Obviously winning here for the first time in 1996 gave me an affinity. And then I won again in 2000 when I won the money list, so I've had a lot of success in Sweden and it's somewhere I enjoy coming to.

"I played nicely yesterday but today I played a little bit better," he explained. "I'm getting to know the course a little bit better every day and it was there for the taking this morning. There was not a lot of wind and the greens were pretty pure.

"I'm putting the ball well and rolling it nicely on the greens, which gives you confidence," he added. "I hit it pretty close so I gave myself a lot of chances."

Lloyd Saltman, ranked 512 in the world, also carded a 64, the highlight of which was an albatross on the par-5 12th that came after he struck a sweet 3-iron that rolled in from some 237 yards.

"I had a great number," he said. "I started walking then heard a little roar and knew it was in, so that was nice."

Saltman was joined by local favorite Peter Hanson and Spain's Carlos Del Moral at 9 under. Hanson had a double bogey at the 11th but recovered with three birdies in his next four holes.

"I didn't strike the ball as well as I would have hoped and 68 was a good result," said 2008 champion Hanson.

A score of 72 meant overnight leader Magnus Carlsson was five shots off the lead along with one-time clubhouse leader Richard Bland.

Sergio Garcia threatened briefly, but he found water at the par-5 13th and made 69 to finish two rounds at 6 under.

WHAT: Unilever’s annual Backpack Give-Away event is tomorrow, Tuesday, August 19. Mayor Sheila Dixon, Ravens football star Ray Lewis, and Diakon Place will join Unilever to hand out backpacks filled with supplies to an estimated 500 children from the Baltimore area. (PAL Center, City and Local Youth Programs) Unilever employee volunteers at the Holabird Avenue plant in Baltimore City assembled the backpacks and will be on hand to help distribute the packs.



For many children, this time of year can be stressful because they may not be able to afford all the supplies that can make their schoolwork easier. This circumstance can often lead to lowered self-esteem. Unilever is committed to helping to address the critical nationwide problem of low self-esteem among adolescent and pre-adolescent youth - with a special focus on underserved communities.

＜スタンレーレディス　最終日◇17日◇東名カントリークラブ(6,500ヤード・パー72)＞

　静岡県にある東名カントリークラブで開催された、国内女子ツアー「スタンレーレディスゴルフトーナメント」の最終日。首位タイスタートの有村智恵が、途中5連続バーディを奪うなど、スコアをトータル15アンダーまで伸ばしてフィニッシュ。今季初優勝を挙げた。

　2位は横峯さくら、3位には諸見里しのぶが入った。諸見里は、1番から7番まで連続バーディを奪取。8番ではイーグルを奪い、これまでの7連続バーディを上回る、8連続バーディ以上のツアー新記録を達成。前半で“27”をマークし、ハーフの最少ストローク記録も塗り替えた。

＜日本女子オープン　最終日◇6日◇相模原ゴルフクラブ・東コース(6,652ヤード・パー72)＞

　2010年以来2度目となる日本女子オープンを制覇を達成した宮里美香。そのキャディとして宮里を支えたのが石川遼のエースキャディとして活躍した加藤大幸氏だ。加藤氏が宮里のキャディに就任したのは今年の米メジャー最終戦「エビアン選手権」から。今大会で3試合目のタッグで、国内メジャー優勝という最高の結果を出して見せた。

　5打のリードを持って迎えた最終日。だが、前半からボギーが続きスコアを落とす苦しい展開で18ホールは幕を開けた。「1つボギーを叩くたびに話しかけていた。いくら悪くてもスイングだけは小さくならないようにって」。キャディとしてコミュニケーションをとりながらリズムを作ろうとしたが悪い流れは止まらない。誰もの脳裏に09年大会で4打のリードを守りきれず敗れた記憶がよぎった。

　それでも、優勝を決める最後のパットの場面では加藤氏のアドバイスが光った。「いつも通り読んで、ラインの真ん中あたりに、ちょうどいいディボットがあったのでそこを通すように」と、ボールの通過ポイントを指さして指示。カップ3つ分曲がる下りのスライスだったが、「今日はグリーンが重くて打ちきれていなかったので、下りのほうがいいかなと思っていた」と宮里の背中を押して優勝に導いた。

　実は加藤氏が宮里の新キャディに就任したことによる副産物もあった。宮里がドライバーに使用しているシャフトは、レモンイエローのカラーリングが特徴的なグラファイトデザイン社のTOUR AD MT-6(SR)。同社の社員である加藤氏は、宮里からキャディの依頼を受けた際に「キャディやるからウチのシャフト使って」と交換条件を打診した。

　宮里も試打の好結果を受けて別メーカーのものからシャフトをチェンジ。すると、ドライバーの球筋が安定し飛距離も出るようになった。契約を結ぶテーラーメイド社のプロ担当も「夏ごろからドライバーは良かったのですが、シャフトを変えてからより安定するようになった」とギアチェンジ効果を証言。今大会でも狭いフェアウェイを安定してとらえたティショットは、加藤氏の“営業努力”のたまものでもあった。

　2人のタッグは当初今大会までだったが、今シーズンいっぱいまで延長が決定。さらにコンビネーションを強化していく。

　2010年大会以来2度目となる「日本女子オープン」制覇を達成した宮里美香。今回がテーラーメイドに契約が変わってから初めての勝利となる。そのクラブセッティングで特徴的なのがシャフト44インチのドライバーだ。

　テーラーメイドのプロ担当によれば、「契約変更でテストした際に短くしたらいきなり初速が出た。44インチはプロでは一番短いのではないでしょうか。女子プロの平均は45.75インチくらいなので相当短いです」。短尺にすることによりヘッドスピードは落ちるがミート率が上がることで平均飛距離はアップ。方向安定性も高い。

　クラブに関しては徹底した感覚派で、見た目や顔にこだわる。個体差によるわずかなブレにも敏感で担当者も「感覚派すぎて、サブクラブが用意できないくらい」と語るほどだ。

　国内女子メジャー第3戦「日本女子オープン」終了時点の賞金ランキングが発表され、同大会で4位に入った森田理香子が首位をキープした。同大会で惜しくも1打差の2位タイに終わった佐伯三貴は2位に浮上。同じく2位タイでフィニッシュした菊地絵理香も14位に順位を上げた。優勝した宮里美香は国内女子ツアーのツアーメンバーではないため、このランキングには獲得賞金は反映されない。

＜スタンレーレディス 事前情報◇10日◇東名カントリークラブ（6,540ヤード・パー72）＞

　国内女子ツアー「スタンレーレディス」が11日（金）に開幕。2007年大会のチャンピオン上田桃子はプロアマ大会に出場し、最終調整を行った。

　2007年大会以来の出場となる上田。会場となる東名カントリークラブは2グリーンから1グリーンに改修するなど若干の変更が加えられているため、「だいぶ変わってましたね」とコースの変化を実感。しかし、「優勝したこともあるし、大好きなコース。ここで是非とも優勝争いしたい」と今季の初勝利、そして2007年以来となる大会2勝目に意欲を見せた。

　今季の上田はここまで思うような成績を残せず米国の賞金ランキングで86位、日本でも76位と日米両ツアーにおいて来季シード権獲得に向けて厳しい状況が続いている。シーズンも終盤に差しかかり、出場できる試合数も限られてくるが、上田はまず「出場する試合で自分のスタイルの攻めるゴルフで優勝すること」を意識して、目の前の試合で自分のゴルフをやりきることに集中している。「最近はそういった自分らしい攻めのゴルフができているし、しっかりピンをさしていきたい。初日から出遅れないように、日曜日を見すえてマネジメントしていきたい」と初日からスタートダッシュをかけ、2011年「ミズノクラシック」以来となる国内ツアー優勝を目指していく。
